Potential problems for the Tumblr braintrust in this open light:
- Where exactly is the “line” between decent, acceptable suggestive “art” and bizarre fetish smut that violates the terms of service? Granted, child pornography will certainly draw a banstick but what about bestiality or other niches flush with images that would repulse most viewers?
- Awareness of its porn friendly nature, floodgates are opened to porn purveryors, who in increasing numbers, eagerly spawn Tumblr sites, capitalizing on the loose categorization. Then soon, 90%+ of server computing resources are dedicated to “adult content”. At which point, the Tumblr brand is equated to a directory of pornography pages. Yes, the cited 80% of top Tumblr sites devoted to adult content may be a truth that’s existed for some time, but greater public knowledge of this will likely accelerate this “Matthew Effect”.
- A segment of Tumblr customers is put off or offended by the Tumblr porn champions, and departs these microblogging shores for cleaner web locales.
